What is a Character Attack?

A character attack occurs when someone attacks a person or group instead of the validity of their statements or behavior. It attempts to discredit someone by shifting focus to the person instead of the issue - by attacking their character, intelligence, physical appearance, morals, etc. It is one of the most common logical fallacies, called ad hominem abusive in Latin.
