  What is a Character Attack?

  A character attack occurs when someone attacks a person or group instead of the validity of their statements or behavior. It attempts to discredit someone by shifting focus to the person instead of the issue - by attacking their character, intelligence, physical appearance, morals, etc. It is one of the most common logical fallacies, called ad hominem abusive in Latin. Character attacks undermine the dignity of the person, while failing to prove the argument. Messages containing character attacks are automatically removed from this website.

  Examples:

  • Unacceptable: 'The teacher is a liar.' Acceptable: 'The teacher lied.'
  • 'The teacher is manipulative.' should be rephrased to, 'The statement undermined my child's faith because of X,Y,Z.'
  • Unacceptable: 'Democrats/Republicans are evil.' Acceptable: 'The Republican/Democrat perspective on X,Y,Z is wrong.'
  • Unacceptable: 'The parent is ignorant.' Acceptable: 'The facts in the parent's claim are incorrect.'
  • Unacceptable: 'You didn't go to college, so no one should listen to you.' Acceptable: 'Your argument is wrong because of X,Y,Z.'
